The Right Time to Cease LBS Services

Cingular announced it will cease its mMode LBS offering “Find Friends” and “Find Things Nearby” in January 2006. Their spokesman mentioned:

Our active number of subscribers that use this service on a weekly basis has dwindled significantly, we have determined that this is the right time to cease our LBS services on mMode.

    Wow. This is interesting to think about — what does it mean for the aspirations of we working on the mobile social software idiom? I mean, practically speaking, it means not so much. I wonder who will follow suit? Or — is it too soon for (US) mobile subscribers to figure out how LBS fits into their mobile social lives?

    That’s kind of sad. Has anyone done studies on why usage dwindled? Maybe the service was just bad? Maybe it wasn’t want users were expecting?
